The praying mantis is a member of the Mantid group of insects. Mantids come in many shapes and sizes and are found all over the world. Some have patterns on their bodies that help them look like the ground. Some are bright green to blend in with leaves and plants. One special mantis is bright pink and looks like an orchid. The mantis is such a strange and engaging creature that many people keep them as pets. For many reasons, mantids have fascinated humans for many years.

First, mantids show an amazing mastery of hunting skills. Mantids eat a wide variety of insects, including moths, crickets, bees, flies, grasshoppers, other mantids, and even, on occasion, small birds and snakes. They can capture prey many times larger than they are. Their powerful armor and amazing hunting skills make them quite effective. They have large powerful front legs, with spikes that help them hold on to prey. Their head can turn almost entirely around to follow prey without moving. Their front legs are so powerful and so fast that it is hard to see them move when capturing prey. One second their legs are empty and the next they are clutching tightly to something they have caught.

Mantids are also stealthy. They wait, very still, very patiently for prey to come into sight. They also make slight swaying movements, to mimic leaves and grass moved by the wind. They focus intently on their victim. Then they pounce, suddenly, rarely missing their target. They are so successful they can triple in size every few months by molting when they outgrow their exoskeletons. They start out as nymphs, able to capture only prey that is smaller than they are. They end their lives about a year later becoming predators that can take down prey as large as hummingbirds.

Finally, they are very personable, as far as insects go. They have a large, triangular-shaped head with large eyes. This alien-like appearance makes them quite cute. When you come across them in the garden, you can tell right away they are aware of you. They follow your movements as if to assess if you are either something to eat or something that will eat them. The little ones will accept rides on your finger if you are gentle. But be careful—they can jump surprisingly far even when small. If they think your freckle is prey, you may be surprised to find a mantis on your nose.

As far as predatory insects go, the mantis is one of the most impressive. Gardeners love to find them in on vegetables because mantids eat many insects that damage crops. However, they may also eat some insects that help a gardener—like bees. Regardless, the mantis is a fascinating insect, and if you happen to see one hunting in the wild, consider yourself lucky.

He was white. White as memories lost. He was free. Free as

happiness is. He was fantasy, liberty, and excitement. He

filled and dominated the mountain valleys and surrounding

plains. He was a white horse that f looded my youth with

dreams and poetry.

Around the campfires of the country and in the sunny

patios of the town, the ranch hands talked about him with

enthusiasm and admiration. But gradually their eyes would

become hazy and blurred with dreaming. The lively talk

would die down. All thoughts fixed on the vision evoked by

the horse. Myth of the animal kingdom. Poem of the world

of men.

White and mysterious, he paraded his harem through

the summer forests with lordly rejoicing. Winter sent him

to the plains and sheltered hillsides for the protection of hisfemales. He spent the summer like an Oriental potentate in

his woodland gardens. The winter he passed like an illustrious

warrior celebrating a well-earned victory.

He was a legend. The stories told of the Wonder Horse were

endless. Some true, others fabricated. So many traps, so many

snares, so many searching parties, and all in vain. The horse

always escaped, always mocked his pursuers, always rose

above the control of man. Many a valiant cowboy swore to put

his halter and his brand on the animal. But always he had to

confess later that the mystic horse was more of a man than he.

I was fifteen years old. Although I had never seen the

Wonder Horse, he filled my imagination and fired my

ambition. I used to listen open-mouthed as my father and the

ranch hands talked about the phantom horse who turned into

mist and air and nothingness when he was trapped. I joined

in the universal obsession—like the hope of winning the

lottery—of putting my lasso on him some day, of capturing

him and showing him off on Sunday afternoons when the

girls of the town strolled through the streets.

It was high summer. The forests were fresh, green, and gay.

The cattle moved slowly, fat and sleek in the August sun and

shadow. Listless and drowsy in thelethargyof late afternoon,

I was dozing on my horse. It was time to round up the herd

and go back to the good bread of the cowboy camp. Already

my comrades would be sitting around the campfire, playing

the guitar, telling stories of past or present, or surrendering to

the languor of the late afternoon. The sun was setting behind

me in a riot of streaks and colors. Deep, harmonious silence.

I sit drowsily still, forgetting the cattle in the glade.

Suddenly the forest falls silent, a deafening quiet. The

Some people say homework is the most important teaching tool. Others say it’s just meaningless work. But the truth is that homework is a necessary evil. Children (and even some parents) may not like homework. But it has real benefits. First, homework helps the student go over what they learned at their own pace. That way, they can practice the concepts they learned in school. Second, homework helps parents and children bond. Kids often turn to parents for help, and this makes their relationship stronger. Third, and most important, homework helps the teacher know which students need their help. Then they can focus on those students. It's true that homework can be stressful. But that problem must be blamed on the teacher, not the homework itself. Instead of giving too much homework, teachers must learn to give interesting and creative homework. Some students even pass this stress on to parents who try to help. Schools should stop giving out homework in order to lessen the burden on students and parents.
